Keeping Acne to a Minimum in the Shower

Many misconceptions about skin care and acne seem logical, but are in fact farther away from the truth. Take for instance the stance that you should scrub your face well to wash away acne, though it seems logical it is a farfetched solution and in fact can aggravate the problem. Some people are inclined to use harsh soap to keep the body and free from infection without realizing that it cannot prevent an outbreak of acne.

To stop a major eruption of acne, a few methods of cleansing the skin could be followed:

  • A shower is recommended rather than taking a bath because the constant flow of water under a shower opens pores and the contaminants go down the drain and it also relieves pain. It has been found that people who shower rinse their body thoroughly and this rids the body of dead skin and oily cells. If you bath in a bathtub the pustule infections may move to a new location and create new breakouts of acne.
  • Do not use a washcloth vigorously as the chances of acne spreading to other parts of the face increases. It is recommended that you use a soft washcloth and blot the water from the face avoiding force or vigorous rubbing. Another practice recommended by most dermatologists is to wash your face before entering the shower as it prevents the infection spreading to other parts of the body.
  • It is also recommended that your face is free of shampoo while you wash your hair and you should make sure that no shampoo falls on sensitive areas that are infected.
  • In the bathtub, a few ounces of hydrogen peroxide added to the water would help in destroying bacteria in the opened pores.
  • Use very hot water (the maximum that you can withstand) as it opens the pores completely, rids the area of bacteria and releases the oils. Mild soaps are generally fine but specific soaps for acne are also found to be helpful.

  • Taking two showers a day, one in the morning and one in the evening, has been found to be helpful. However if you take only one shower a day it is recommended that you wash your face regularly.
  • If you are prone to acne, keeping the pores open is the best option, as it would prevent an outbreak of acne. To keep the pores open you need to cleanse your face regularly with wipes or by washing the affected area.
  • To control acne you may apply sunscreen when you are out in the sun to keep your sensitive skin from infections.
  • Keep your hands off the infected area and the chances of the outbreak spreading to other parts become remote.
  • The hair contains a lot of oil secretions and constant touching of the hair and the face leads to outbreaks of acne. Keep your hand off your hair and outbreaks could be prevented.
  • Be sure to remove your makeup before entering the shower as it may drip on to a sensitive area and result in acne outbreaks.
  • Mirrors in the shower room should be removed if you have the habit of squeezing pimples. This is a dangerous practice as it could lead to permanent scars on the face.
  • Be sure of following good hygiene in the shower and chances are that outbreaks of acne could be prevented.
