Teenage Acne

Three out of four teens get infected with acne and some of them may end up with severe psychological damage or physical scarring for life. Teens may lose their self-confidence and self esteem due to the onslaught of acne. Many of them feel embarrassed by the outbreak and tend to provide false reasons for not attending social gatherings and events.

It is especially necessary for parents, teachers and others to realize the trauma that is undergone by teens with acne. Teens feel ugly and feel they are not clean, and so they try to hide from the spotlight. Teenagers should be advised by their parents and teachers that acne is a normal phase of life and will probably disappear by the age of 20. They should also understand the cause of acne.

Acne occurs when the hair follicles of your skin are blocked. Each follicle contains sebaceous glands that produce a fatty oil (sebum) that lubricates your hair and skin. When there is too much oil it becomes infected; pimples and blackheads are the outcome. But, there is hope because a healthy regimen combined with proper care will help in fighting acne.

Acne is believed to be hereditary and the exact cause is unknown. It is generally believed that hormonal changes in the body create imbalances in the body and stimulate sebaceous glands, which in turn increases the production of sebum that fill the hair follicles. This in turn increases the creation of more cells and old cells are shed rapidly. These cells mix with sebum and block the follicles, which become prone to infection. Once infected you experience acne breakouts. blackheads and whiteheads are also a form of acne.

Acne is highly contagious and picking pimples could cause more breakouts in the area. Picking is especially dangerous as the chances of getting scarred for life is high.

Teens should be told of this, and though some of them unconsciously try to pick pimples, they should be told in serious terms not to pick them. Teenagers should also be made to realize that the pus-like liquid is extremely contagious and they should not touch any other body part as the infection could be transferred there. It is advised that they wash their hands thoroughly.

Teens with acne start losing self-esteem and they need to get approval at this point of time in their life. The symptoms are they start dropping old friends and start taking new friends from whom they get approval. They tend to speak in a low voice and keep their heads down while walking. If these symptoms are found, then you need to have talk with the teenager and let him or her know that 3 out of 4 people have acne and in various forms. They should be advised on proper care and on how to prevent spreading of the outbreak. Once the teenager feels wanted and comfortable, he or she will not mind the outbreaks and they will regain lost self-confidence and self esteem. Stress is also a factor, which increases the outbreak of acne, and teenagers should try to be as stress free as possible.

Studies conducted by dermatologists have found that no matter the popularity, once there is an outbreak, you are treated differently. So it helps to understand how acne is caused and the need to minimize outbreaks. There are many over-the-counter treatments, which are beneficial in easing pain and preventing outbreaks. A dermatologist would be the right person to help you if there is a severe outbreak of acne.
