Oily Skin and Acne

People with oily skin are more prone to acne than any other type of skin. Oil glands are more commonly known as sebaceous glands. In medical terms, the oil, which is secreted by the sebaceous glands, is known as sebum. These glands secrete oil in the face, neck, chest and others parts of the body. But the nose is the region which is largely affected as lots of oil is secreted and accumulated here. The pores in this area are larger and the oil then flows to most part of the face. The amount of oil that is produced depends upon individual to individual.

During teenage years, due to increase in the level of sex hormones known as androgens, the sebaceous glands produce more oil because these androgens increase and activate the sebaceous glands. The extra sebum that is produced is the main cause of inflammation and acne. Even though sebum causes acne and inflammation, when your glands and your whole system is working properly it helps in performing an important part in maintaining and acting as a lubricant for the skin. People with oily skin should take measures to keep the pores from getting blocked and forming acne.

Skin Care:

There is no treatment to completely stop or prevent sebum production, but these tips will keep the oil and acne under control:

  • Even though dirt, pollution and oil in the exterior part of the skin do not cause acne, it could worsen the situation by blocking the pores. It is advisable to wash your face regularly or at least twice a day so that the pores do not get clogged.
  • Use an astringent to remove the excess oil.
  • Never use any oil-based cosmetic.
  • While going to bed make sure to remove your makeup and it is also advisable not to use any kind of cold cream and lotions.
  • When it comes to diet it is advisable to eliminate oily and fried stuff, fish and iodized salt. Too much consumption of iodine exacerbates the acne.
  • Alcohol-based lotions and creams are to be avoided completely.

  • Oil-based sunscreen should be avoided.
  • Although moisturizing is not advisable on a daily basis. Oil-free moisturizers can be applied if your skin is rough after washing.
  • Doctors have found out that there is a direct link between stress and acne. Studies have shown that there is an increase in the amount of androgen production when a person is under stress. Not only mental but physical stress such as allergies and surgery could activate the androgen production. When androgen is activated the sebaceous glands pumps out more oil/sebum.
  • Don’t pop or squeeze pimples, as it could lead to inflammation and infection. It could also push the infected materials deep into the skin and create more swelling. Sometimes it can even cause permanent scarring.
  • First use warm water to wash the face (to remove dirt) and use cold water to rinse.
  • If you get acne on your body, it is advisable not to wear tight clothes.
  • Drink water regularly, as it keeps the skin healthy.

Topical Medications:

In most over-the-counter acne topical treatments, Benzyl peroxide is the active ingredient. It has the ability to kill the acne causing bacteria and it is advisable to apply twice daily. For acute acne it is better to meet a dermatologist.
