Cyst Removal and Prevention

Acne is a disease, which affects three out of four people. It is impossible to stop the outbreaks of acne. The disease also causes emotional trauma to a lot of people. Proper precautions must be taken to prevent scarring of the skin. Treatment for acne is available, but it varies among individuals as every individual has a different skin type. Treatment also depends on the severity of acne outbreaks.

The easiest treatment is the application of lotions available on the market for acne. But this treatment is successful only for people with a few pimples and not with people who are severely affected. Lotions and creams for the treatment of acne contain benzyl peroxide, which possesses anti-bacterial qualities and is found to help in decreasing whiteheads.

There are other types of treatment available on the market. These may be beneficial for some but not for others. For example, facial gel masks containing colloidal silicic acid has been found to be helpful in the treatment of acne and tea tree oil gel with its antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties has also been found to be very beneficial for certain people.

If the acne is severe and if it is cystic acne, it may be resistant to the aforementioned treatment. If a person is diagnosed with cystic acne, dermatologists normally prescribe antibiotics to decrease inflammation and bacteria. Treatment for cystic acne is lengthy and normally takes at least 6 months. Improvement is usually seen within 2 months of commencing treatment.

For extreme cases of cystic acne, a dermatologist prescribes medicines, which are powerful so as to reduce outbreaks of acne and the resultant spread. Medicines containing retinol are usually prescribed. If it is a case of severe cystic acne the dermatologist may advise dermabrasion. In some cases laser therapy may be suggested. Cosmetic surgery is advised to patients as a last resort when there is severe scarring due to cystic acne.

To prevent cystic acne the following measures should be adopted:

  • The affected area should be cleaned thoroughly with an anti-bacterial soap or face wash. Products which use tea tree or neem as the base is considered to be the best. Witch hazel lotion is also said to be a good skin cleanser.
  • Washing hands and nails thoroughly is essential. The facial area should not be touched and picking of pimples has to be avoided completely as this leads to permanent scars on the face.
  • Application of tea tree oil on the affected area is beneficial. Care should be taken while applying the oil and should not be applied near eyes. A skin test conducted before application helps immensely.
  • Food plays a very important role in the prevention of acne. A proper diet of fresh vegetables, fruits and grains is a proven method for preventing acne. Foods that contain saturated fats and dairy products should be avoided.
  • Zinc-rich foods like fish and nuts are very beneficial.
  • Consumption of coffee and tea should be reduced and consumption of water should be at least 8 glasses a day.
  • Exercising regularly also helps in keeping the skin clean.

If proper preventive steps are taken, breakouts of acne can be avoided. For severe cases a visit to the dermatologist is recommended instead of going for over-the-counter medicines.
