Bacne Information

Acne is acne no matter where it appears, but "bacne" is a term for acne that appears on the back. Bacne seems to be suffered more by men than by women, though women do have outbreaks of acne on their backs as well.

Bacne is caused by acne and clogged sweat glands, which can be very aggravated by perspiration. After any activity that causes excessive perspiration such as a gym workout, running, garden work or even heavy housework, you should always wash to help alleviate the condition and cleanse the pores quickly.

A daily use of a mild exfoliate in the shower each day can also help manage the removal of excess dead skin cells. The most difficult part of treating bacne is the location and that it is out of sight. Using a back scrubber while using a mild cleanser is most effective. As with all forms of acne, a person should refrain from using harsh or abrasive cleaners so the skin will not become irritated or inflamed.

Once out of the shower, blot the skin dry with a clean towel then apply an acne treatment that includes antibacterial agents, such as Benzoyl Peroxide, to the back and shoulder area.

Stubborn back acne is a hereditary problem that often requires oral antibiotics. The acne that appears on the back is more stubborn than acne on the face and can be more resistant to treatment. Because the skin on the back is also tougher than the skin on the face, bacne can be treated more aggressively. Using mild cleansers that contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help with milder or occasional outbreaks. **Extreme care needs to be taken if you choose to take oral medications as many lead to depression and suicidal thoughts. Those who are prone to depression or who are going through pressing/challenging times in their lives should use only to topical derma treatments. For more treatment options, click here.**

Because perspiration and bacteria aggravates the condition, always wear clean bras and T-shirts when working out and put a clean towel down before lying on exercise machines or mats in a gym. Never go directly from a workout to a steam room, always take a shower after a sweaty workout to get rid of dirt and bacteria.

Heat and increased circulation caused by exercise increases the production of sebum, the skin's natural oil. Acne is caused by excess sebum production that hardens and forms a plug to clog the pores. Dead skin cells, bacteria and additional sebum behind the plug form infection.

To ease the conditions that help bacne occur:

  • Wash once or twice daily with a mild soap and water
  • Clean with an exfoliator, toner, and restoring lotion
  • Use a oil-absorbing microfiber cloth
  • Always shower after a perspiring activity
  • Be sure to change into a clean bra/shirt before and after workouts
  • Remember that tight, constricting clothes can irritate areas of the skin
  • Change towels, pillowcases and sheets often
  • Avoid irritating detergents and fabric softeners

If bacne is persistent, painful or your self-esteem is suffering, see a dermatologist about possible treatment with antibiotics.
