The Coca-Cola* and Acne Myth

Endocrinologists conducted studies to find the relation between the consumption of Coca-Cola and the breakout of zits among teenagers. The result of the studies isclear. The facts proved that hormones, heredity factors, and other less significant factors are the main causes of acne.

There have been many studies about the effects of drinks and food on acne. None of them have concluded food or any form of beverages cause acne. Coca-Cola or any other drink, including milk, as a flare-up component was not recognized by these studies.

Dermatologists also agree there is no consumed food or beverage that causes acne. They all agree that the myth was born because people tend to consume the same foods prior to a breakout and then associate the food with the acne problem.

Drinks such as Coca-Cola are usually consumed by teens in fast food restaurants and if they visit it often, or work there, the pores react to the grease in the environment. If you happen to notice excess oil on your face, we recommend using oil-absorbing microfiber cloths.

Scientists also proved that acne has several influencing elements that provoke breakouts such as stress, exposure to pollutants, and different skin types. However, stress has recently come under advisements whereby scientists are beginning to think stress may not be directly related to acne.

When Coca-Cola was first on the market it was used as a medicinal tonic with an excellent taste. At first it contained Cocaine and cola nut and was marketed as a “brain-provoking tonic.”

Cola was hauled from farmstead to farmstead and to every town by the medicine man wagons and no matter what, it cured everything from acne to hemorrhoids.

Once it was discovered that the ingredient Cocaine actually had extremely negative effects on the body, it was considered illegal until a new recipe containing only cola nut and “fizz” was formulated.

Doctors have shown that sugar is a depressant, and if teens or adults with acne drink a large amount of sugary colas, depression can be a result for many. Depression is a condition that can be triggered by hormones, one of the main culprits that cause acne.

Drinking water or juice instead of colas or sweet drinks during outbreaks will help lower or prevent acne. Drinking at least 4 - 6 glasses of fluid a day keeps the body in balance and helps prevent flare-ups of acne.

If you want to consider the differences between drinking water and Cola, you may think about some of the things for which colas are used:

  • Cola is used to remove blood from highway accidents.
  • If you put a thick steak in a bowl of cola, the cola will disappear in two days or less .
  • Cola is a good agent to clean stains
  • Cola cleans terminals on battery cables.
  • To remove grease from clothes, empty a can of cola into a load of clothes with the soap and the grease will disappear.
  • Cola is used to clean windshields.
  • If you place a nail in the bottom of a glass with a can of Cola poured on top, the cola will disappear in about three days.
  • Cola syrup is considered a hazardous waste product.

After considering the above factors, it is up to the consumer to decide which is better for him or her, cola or water.
